Power Point

  1. Hi, I thought your presentation was centered around an interesting point on gender equality. His development of women was something I had not paid too much attention to before especially since, in school, we seem to focus on Shakespeare’s development of predominantly male characters. One of my books, A Thousand Splendid Suns, also focuses on gender inequality. However, while my novel exposed these themes through its rather obvious plotline, yours did so solely through the development of strong female characters which was more subtle but just as effective. Either way, it was interesting to note that very different authors have been doing the same thing for centuries: speaking for those who cannot speak out for themselves. Another thematic point in your presentation I noticed was your question, “love the woman because it’s accepted or love the man because he actually loves the man?” In my book, Baba has a son Amir as well as an illegitimate son Hassan and faces a similar issue. For much of the story, he seems to love Hassan more but does not openly show this since it is not socially-acceptable; As an adult, Amir asks himself a similar version of the question you posed. I also liked the blue and pink cupcakes and the connection you made with their store-bought-ness and how its manufacturing related to the widespread predominance of prejudice in Shakespeare’s time.

  2. I found your presentation very interesting. You took a very unique approach to analyzing Shakespeare, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Many people tend to not focus on the woman in Shakespearean literature. For example, most of the plays he writes have titles that are also male characters, most of the characters in his plays are make, and in this time period men played all the parts in a play, even the female ones. The fact that you focused on the strong woman characters in his writings, was not expected of me and very interesting.

You incorporated the many different texts very well into your presentation, making a clear thesis that which encompasses all of them. I really liked how the poems you chose were actually sonnets written by Shakespeare himself. I don’t think anyone else used a poem from the author of their novel. That being said, your presentation stood out and was very intriguing to me.

  3. I would like to first applaud you for your great presentation! I think you did a nice job of explaining your theme through the cupcakes with the pink and blue dots, which usually symbolize gender. From there, students could understand the main focus of your presentation. I think it was simple, yet creative and followed the theme of your presentation perfectly. The aesthetics of your blog is quite pleasing and further your analysis of Shakespeare’s writing. Such as the masks, which represent the genre of tragedy and comedy that is seen throughout Shakespeare’s text, as well as the pink and blue coloring. The color coordination of pink and blue is also interwoven throughout your project and I think you did a nice job of keeping a coherent theme.
Although there are a few formatting errors within your blog, your presentation, however, truly opened my eyes as to how our English classes tend to only focus on the development of male characters in each of Shakespeare’s writing. I was wondering about your opinions as to why this is? I think you did a great job of focusing on how Shakespeare’s writing style gave women a voice in literature. I think your activity also did a nice job of showing Shakespeare’s voice and allowing for an engaging presentation. Thank you so much for giving this new insight to a classic writer!

  4. Addy! I want to say how impressed I am that you chose to do Shakespeare. I never would have had the guts to take on such complex writing! But what I loved most about your presentation was that you didn't focus just on his writing, but a bigger picture: his sexuality. I had heard small comments that Shakespeare was a homosexual, but you provided very convincing evidence. The most convincing for me was in your sonnets. The one about the angels is almost an outright admittance. You did well at explaining his language and making it seem simple. The activity you provided was perfect for explaining the language and making it seem a little less like it was overly elegant and confusing.

I thought it was good that you did both a tragedy and a comedy, so you could show it wasn't simply one play where his strong female roles appeared. I think that addressing what James brought up about him demeaning women by dressing them as men would be a good post for your blog in the future because it was an interesting point! However, I do think you are right opposed to him because you showed a lot of solid textual evidence about the strength of Kate and Cordelia's voice. All in all, you did an awesome job with a very hard author!
